North Londoner, Darren Barker has travelled over to Atlantic City to fight the 3rd ranked pound for pound Middleweight Champion of the World, Sergio Martinez.

The odds are truely stacked against Barker, who won the European Middleweight title in 2010. Barker is an exceptional domestic / European fighter, who is a much respected boxer over here in the UK. But to go into the ring with a top ranked fighter like Sergio Martinez seems like he has an almost impossible task ahead of him.

Barker does, however have a good chin, which has been demonstrated in his previous fights against a good standard of opponents. He has not however been in a situation which he will find himself in in the early hours of Sunday Morning (GMT).

Sergio Martinez is one of boxing’s most respected and well knowns pugilists who has certainly earned his title of boxing in the top 3 pound for pound fighters, only below Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, and this is certainly no mean feat.

Martinez has been tested with many other top ranked fighters and has proven hi ability to box to near perfection, defend and stay the distance, all the markings of a true champion. Only 2 defeats are on his very near impecable world record. One to Antonio Margarito in 2000 and the tall Paul Williams in 2009, but Martinez evened the score in 2010.

HBO described Martinez knocking Williams out as,

The knockout of the year. . . it’s sensational, shocking one punch knockout of a normally iron chin top notch fighter

This Saturday is D Day for Darren, and he is highly unlikely to cope with the sheer aggression of Martinez. He will have to dig verry dep into the trenches if he wants to sruvive, let alone win. He is a very brave fighter for taking on this fight, and it is believed by a lot of pundits that this really is a step too far at this point in his career.

I do wish him the best of British luck.
